The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), also known as the African Parliament, is the legislative body of the African Union and held its inaugural session in March 2004. The PAP exercises oversight, and has advisory and consultative powers in order to ensure the full participation of African peoples in the development and economic integration of the continent.
Two African Heads of State arrived in South Africa for the Pan African Parliament’s 4th Ordinary Session, which runs from 8 to 19 May at the Parliament’s headquarters in Midrand. Their Excellencies, President Roch March Christian Kaboré of Burkina Faso and President Arthur Peter Mutharika of Malawi.
The Heads of States’ presence at the first ordinary session for the year, gives MPs an opportunity to meet with them directly and discuss some of the key issues our continent is facing. About 35 African Ambassadors will also attend the session..
At least 19 new Members of Parliament (MPs) from seven African Countries namely Botswana, Chad, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Seychelles and Somalia will be sworn in as members of the Pan African Parliament. The Chairperson of the African Union, His Excellency Moussa Faki will be gracing the event. The
Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States of America, H.E Dr. Arikana Chihombori, the President of the National Assembly of Serbia, Mrs. Maja Gojković, as well as the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, H.E Pedro Roques and His Eminence Ioannis Archbishop of Zambia and Malawi are expected to deliver messages of solidarity at this event.
